The Schoolhouse

The Schoolhouse is structured as an open classroom intended to inspire love of learning by allowing children to proceed at their own pace, fostering a sense of personal responsibility. The students are grouped into four skills-based, rather than traditional aged based groups, based on their developmental levels: Alpha (for beginning), Tau (for transition), Omega (for ending) and Sage (for wise ones). The philosophy is that “children learn best from other children” so the schedule allows daily interaction between students of varied ages “as job partners and reading buddies, while playing at recess and learning together in short courses, or participating in school-wide meetings run by Sages.” Curriculum includes language arts, mathematics, science, Spanish, political geography, cultural history, art, and music, with work being compiled into a portfolio for teacher evaluation.

The Lake Champlain Waldorf School serves children from grades pre-k to 12 on two campuses; grades pre-k to 8 located in Shelburne and the High School located just to the south in Charlotte. Waldorf education is based on the work of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian-born philosopher, artist, scientist and teacher. His belief was that "Waldorf school education is not a pedagogical system but an art - the art of awakening what is actually there within the human being." Education is approached in a holistic way while building a rigorous academic foundation.  “Art, music and language are emphasized equally along with science, math and English in the curriculum” with the intention to teach children how to learn, fostering a love of learning. Critical thinking, communication, innovation and cooperation amongst students is encouraged.
